General Information

What does GPL stand for?
Can I use the GPL software in my own designs?

What does GPL stand for?
"GPL" stands for "General Public License". The most widespread such license is the GNU General Public License, or GNU GPL for short. This can be further shortened to "GPL", when it is understood that the GNU GPL is the one intended.

Can I use the GPL software in my own designs?
You are free to use the software make modifications and use the modified version privately, without ever releasing it. This applies to organizations (including companies), too; an organization can make a modified version and use it internally without ever releasing it outside the organization.

But if you release the modified version to the public in some way, the GPL requires you to make the modified source code available to the program's users, under the GPL.
